The design of Huntington Hospital’s new Emergency Department uses a holistic approach to sustainability. The design focuses on extensive water use reduction, solar orientation, strong energy performance, enhanced commissioning, low-emitting materials and extensive construction waste management. Collectively, these measures helped the project earn a LEED Gold certification.
Huntington Hospital expanded its ED to support the community’s growing need for services. The resulting space doubles its predecessor in size and significantly increases capacity while improving efficiency and patient outcomes. The ED utilizes a split-flow, “Super-Track” model – a system that filters patients between acute and lower-acuity care areas – in order to more effectively manage patient wait times and reduce length of stay. The expanded space purposely connects with the existing hospital on the first-floor level, close to the radiology department and lab services, and with many other key program adjacencies that can facilitate future expansion.

This newly constructed Long Island location extends Westy’s tri-state footprint into northern Suffolk County, Long Island NY. The East Northport location is a brand new 139,120 square foot building, providing over 1,200 storage units.
The East Northport location has a grand atrium lobby with balconies from the upper floors looking into it, as well as art on the walls, soft background music and granite lobby floors. As with all the Westy buildings, the East Northport location was built for permanence with design elements specifically chosen to create a special and inviting atmosphere for their customers – who of course are the most important component of Westy and who all things revolve. Along to the visual aspects of the facility, the building received 5 points for Indoor Environmental Quality Credits that inlcuded: 1) Air Quality Performance, 2) Tobacco Smoke Control, 3) Low Emitting Paint, Sealants, Coatings and Flooring, 4) Thermal comfort design standards.
The building consumes 38% less energy than a standard building (as per comparison to the ASHRAE 90.1-2007 baseline case) and received 14 points for Energy and Atmosphere Cerdit 1. All lighting fixture installations were designed to be LED and all roof top HVAC systems were high efficiency units (with energy recovery capabilities) for which the owner received utility incentives to offset some of the construction cost. The building had quality assurance and verification procedures conducted that inlcuded energy simulation/modeling f the proposed design and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment commissioning services. The building also received additional credits for utilizing regional construction materials, maximizing open space and environmental features, and reducing water usage.

Grow NYC’s greenmarket regional food hub takes a sustainable approach to support their environmental mission.
bld architecture is designing a new 75,000 gsf cold storage distribution center in the hunts point section of the bronx, ny. the greenmarket company has been connecting local upstate farmers with nyc communities since 2012 to help keep fresh, healthy food affordable. the new distribution center includes large loading dock spaces and cold refrigerated storage for the distribution of locally grown fruits and vegetables at wholesale distribution level.
ever socially conscious, the building will be sustainable in every way practicable. waste to water bio-digester technology will be utilized together with rooftop rainwater harvesting from green / blue systems, daylighting and photovoltaic power generation, and electric vehicular charging stations. building systems exhaust will be optimized and harvested for re-use of heat. a living green wall decorates the main façade to reduce solar gain and promote the sustainable initiatives.
(7-31-23 – Note: although Grow NYC in Hunts Point is designed to LEED Platinum specifications, it has not yet received LEED certification.)

LEED Level Achieved: Certified
Square Footage: 5,574
Building Type: Healthcare / Outpatient
Rating System: NC v2009
LEED Consultant: The Cotocon Group
Gold Coast Veterinary Specialists is a specialty referral hospital serving the veterinary medical needs of Long Island’s north shore pet owners as well as other referring veterinarians. This 5,574 SF is constructed adjacent to the West Hills Animal Hospital that was designed for the same Owner and which previously won a national design award. The new hospital was intended to reflect and harmonize with the colors and materials of the West Hills hospital, yet present a dramatically contemporary look with bold forms, abundant glass and integrated signage. The new hospital shares many of the medical facilities with the existing hospital and provides services that include Cardiology, Dermatology, Electrocardiology, Endoscopy, Neurology, Oncology, Opthamology, Orthopedics and Physical Therapy Services.
The green features included are efficient building envelope properties, management of construction waste and building materials, enhanced water conservation and irrigation, and indoor air quality management. The building location maximizes open space and environmental features, has a “white roof” installed, and connectivity with the surrounding community and public transportation services.
The building had commissioning services included in the LEED certification, which verified that all of the building heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment was fully tested and performed as required in the original design documentation. This service was imperative to ensure critical areas such as treatment and operating rooms were operating with-in the temperature, humidity and airlfow requirements of a healthcare facility. An energy simulation/modeling was conducted to verify the building was designed to be more efficient than the local code standards require, along with verification of advanced control systems for lighting and HVAC equipment. The building also received additional credits for utilizing low emitting paint, sealants, coatings with the intent to reduce the quantity of indoor air contaminants that are odorous, irritating and/or harmful to the comfort and well-being of the building occupants.

This 1-story commercial office building was purchased in June 2022 by Chuck Merritt to become the new home for his company, Merritt Environmental Consulting Corporation. The building is 4,710 square feet and sits on a plot size of .41 acres. The building underwent renovations while pursuing the LEED v4 Commercial Interiors project scope. As part of the LEED project, the building was fitted with materials that are made from both pre-consumer and post-consumer recyclables from floor to ceiling. Locally sourced barnwood was reclaimed and used as a design element, prolonging its lifespan and diverting these materials from entering a landfill.
A state-of-the-art HVAC monitoring system was installed to maximize energy efficiency while reducing energy consumption. A spectacular display of biophilic design shows several plants that capture Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), a running water feature with aquatic life, and skylights that offer more natural light into the enclosure. The building is also equipped with green vehicle priority parking and two electric vehicle charging stations. USGBC issued this project a LEED Gold certification on September 27, 2023.
